We have read together as a family, many, many, many, books over many years.  It is has become an identifier for our family.  Not only do we love the stories, but it has become our family “culture”.  Stories are woven into our lives; we have a personal history of book readings.  Our read-alouds have taught us about God and humanity, enlightened us, grown our knowledge of history, helped us map the globe, and grow our vocabulary.

Through our shared experience, we’ve laughed ourselves silly, pondered great ideas, and come to fall in love with characters while disdaining others.  A bank of quotes and imagery are ours forever.  Most of our favourite homeschool memories are around a book or an activity inspired by a book.

An amazing fruit of reading out loud together has been one of bonding love.  All in one room, non-distracted, and focused on something “together”, but also listening to each other’s insights, ideas, predictions, opinions, and emotional response.  After investing in a chapter or two, a half hour or more, we have converged as family around the story and characters.  But we have also written a heart story of our own.

Books and attachment go together.
